The second Kilburn Debate this year seeks to address differing expectations of ‘age’. Working with the Ransackers Association KOVE and the BSG will move outside Kilburn for the first time to the Open University premises in the busy heart of Camden Town. The aim is to involve the older public, younger practitioners, and local residents of all ages as part of the Camden Intergenerational Week which runs from May 9th to the 17th. Discussion in the morning asks ‘Do we have to grow up to grow old?’ with presenters Liesbeth de Block, Emily Momoh and Denise Wilkinson addressing different aspects of the life-course. In response group discussions will focus on whether ageing can be ‘taught’ in schools, and if so how it might be. In the afternoon the Ransackers Association hosts the chair of the Association for Education and Ageing, Dr Jonathan Hughes of the OU, who will lead an extended workshop on the theme ‘Teaching older learners – does age matter?’ Both parts of the day should be of great interest to BSG members and to anyone involved in public and professional conversations about age, generation, adult learning and education policy. The event runs from 10.30am to 3.30pm. It is free, with a break for lunch.
