CONFERENCE
INVOLVING OLDER PEOPLE: MEANINGS AND METHODS
Iris Murdoch Building, University of Stirling
14th June 2010
Involving older people is a well rehearsed goal of policy makers, practitioners and gerontologists. Including senior citizens, in all aspects of life and in decisions about their own lives, is considered beneficial both to older people themselves and to their communities. The Scottish Government strategy, set out in All our Futures: Planning for a Scotland with an Ageing Population (2007) adopts this aim on a broad range of issues. The National Forum on Ageing Futures Group aims to ensure that the views of all sections of the older population are heard in the debate on current issues for the future age agenda in Scotland. The development of the Scottish Governments forthcoming Dementia Strategy has actively involved people with dementia from the Scottish Dementia Working Group.
This one day conference aims to explore the meanings and methods of involving older people and to consider the implications for policy and practice. The conference will examine the involvement of older people from a range of different perspectives, recognising the diversity of the older generations, and drawing on the expertise of older people, academics and practitioners. It will be of interest to older people and all those who work with them for example nurses, care workers, social workers, doctors, allied health professionals, in the statutory and voluntary sectors; service providers and policy makers, as well as academics and students of social gerontology and gerontological practice.
To help us address our conference theme, we have invited Irene Oldfather MSP, Convenor of the Scottish Parliament Cross Party Group on Alzheimer's. Keynote speakers will include: Professor Jill Manthorpe, Kings College London; members of the Scottish Dementia Working Group; Briege McLean, Live and Learn NI, National Museums of Northern Ireland; Professor Emma Reynish, Consultant Physician, Victoria Hospital Kirkcaldy; Dr Harriet Mowat, Mowat Research Ltd. and Professor Roger Clough, Lancaster University The two-hour lunch time will include poster sessions at which authors will speak about their posters. Tours of the dementia friendly Iris Murdoch Building will be available for participants. Thus throughout the day participants will have the opportunity to reflect on the involvement of older people and contribute to wide ranging discussions on ageing and later life.
The provisional programme is below, together with a call for poster abstracts, information about registration and bursary application forms.
