Conference Programme

Welcome to the British Society of Gerontology 47th Annual Conference 2018 at the University of Manchester, to be held from 4 – 6 July 2018. The theme of the 2018 conference is ‘Ageing in an Unequal World Shaping Environments for the 21st Century’. It is a pleasure to announce that our keynote speakers, Armando Barrientos, Suzanne Iwarrson, Peter Lloyd Sherlock, Francie Lund and James Nazroo, will address the conference in three thought-provoking plenaries and panels on this theme.  In addition to these plenaries, delegates have the opportunity to attend presentations and a poster session on a wide range of topics, and the conference will be organised in streams reflecting the conference sub-themes, as well as an open stream. Three flagship symposia to be held on the opening day will be selected by the Conference Directors and Scientific Committee from submitted abstracts.

We are also delighted to be hosting a Welcome Reception on Wednesday 4 July, and our Conference Dinner will be held at the magnificent Principal Hotel. The conference will end at 16:00 on Friday 6 July, and we do hope we can encourage you to stay in town to visit our historic city and region for the weekend at least.

While the main conference begins on Wednesday 4 July at 14:00, we also hold an annual pre-conference for Emerging Researchers in Ageing, our ERA network, which is aimed at students, early career researchers, and established researchers or practitioners who might be transitioning to ageing research. This will begin on Tuesday 3 July and end on Wednesday morning in good time for you to join the main conference on Wednesday.

The programme is set out in the Table below. In parallel with this we will be running special events, and together with the Greater Manchester Ageing Hub, we are we are encouraging and supporting a range of activities as part of a Conference Fringe running throughout the conference week. Please check out the relevant web-pages for more information on these.

The full BSG 2018 Programme will be available online in April 2018. Share BSG 2018 with others! Download the BSG 2018 PowerPoint (Widescreen 16:9) slide to include in your presentation(s).

Poster Session

The Programme incorporates a dedicated poster session on Wednesday 4 July at 15:30 - 16:30. During the conference, the Stirling Prize will be awarded for the best poster presented by a student. Posters will be on display for the duration of the conference.
