About Newcastle

Newcastle University has a long-standing commitment to interdisciplinary research on ageing. The conference is being organised by the Centre for Ageing and Inequalities, which brings together gerontologists from across the University working in the social and medical sciences and in the arts and humanities. The University also has a strong commitment to involving the public in research and innovation, and works closely with project partners VOICE (Valuing Our Intellectual Capital and Experience), a network of thousands of members of the public based at the UK National Innovation Centre for Ageing (NICA).

The conference will be hosted in the Newcastle Helix, a global centre for urban innovation in the heart of the city that brings together academia, the public sector, communities, and business. Within a short distance of the conference you can discover the city’s centuries-old history and heritage, view breathtaking architecture, eat at award-winning restaurants, and visit top- notch attractions and museums. You can also experience superb cultural events – from showstopping theatre, comedy and live music that sits alongside the pubs, clubs, cocktail bars and independent breweries. You can even take a guided tour of St James Park, home of Newcastle United Football Club.

Visitors who want to explore Newcastles’s rich heritage should start with Newcastle Castle, and Great North Museum Visitors can tick off many cultural hotspots in Newcastle in the city too. Look out for Grey’s Monument, The Lit & Phil, Central Arcade, Blackfriars Restaurant and Newcastle's ancient cathedral, which has been in the heart of Newcastle for over 900 years. Getting to Newcastle University

Globally Accessible

You can fly into Newcastle International Airport from over 80 direct destinations worldwide and connect to destinations across the world through a portfolio of scheduled routes to hub airports.

From the airport you can use the Metro to get to the Centre of Newcastle and disembark at the Monument Station; Monument is a five/ten-minute walk to the conference venue and hotels. There are also taxis outside of the airport terminal; these can be booked via the Arrow Taxi booking desk situated inside of the terminal.

Rail Links

Newcastle is easy to get to by train, with 40 trains per day from London arriving in under 3 hours. Edinburgh is just 1.5 hours away.

The conference venue is approximately fifteen-minutes by foot from Central Station. Alternatively you could take the Metro at Central Station and disembark at the Monument Station, which is a five/ten-minute walk to the venue.

Road Transport/ Car Parking at Newcastle Helix

Newcastle is accessible by road via the A1 from the North and the South and the A69 from the West.  The postcode for SAT NAV is NE4 5TF.

Parking is available at The Garage at Helix, Corporation Street, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE4 5TF.  £3.40 for 2 hours (price as of October 2023). Alternatively, there is parking at St James Park, Barrack Road, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 4SE which is short walk away from the venue. £2.40 for 2 hours (Price as of October 2023).
