Welcome to BSG Scotland

We are a group of BSG members who live and/or work in Scotland. Our aims are:

· To promote active membership of BSG within Scotland.
· To provide opportunities for meaningful and constructive networking.

We have an organising group which meets to plan events and activities. The most recent half day event for BSG Scotland members was held on 6 November 2009 at Hamilton Campus, University of the West of Scotland. A one-day Conference, Ageing Well - Option or Aspiration? was held on 19 June 2006 at Glasgow Caledonian Universityand the most recent one day conference was held on 14 June 2010 at University of Stirling. Please see the Calendar for details of events.

You will find details of other BSG Scotland members' research in the BSG Directory where you can search for members in Scotland. If you are a BSG member in Scotland, you will be very welcome to join us at our members' events.

BSG Scotland background

BSG Scotland is a local group within the British Society of Gerontology. BSG Scotland was initiated by Professor Mary Gilhooly, former President of BSG, together with the Scottish Research Forum on Ageing, Lesley Hart, Tilda Gaskell and others. Professor Debbie Tolson, Glasgow Caledonian University, was the first Chair of BSG Scotland. BSG Scotland was launched on 25 June 2002 at a conference held at Glasgow Caledonian University. The conference theme was Advancing the ageing agenda: connecting policy, practice and knowledge in Scotland. The conference was very successful and attended by about 180 people. A further successful conference was held on 24 June 2003 at the Iris Murdoch Centre, University of Stirling with the theme: Ageing in a disabling society. A new organising group (see below) was formed in November 2004, with Susan Tester as Co-ordinator. The following remit was agreed:

· To promote active membership of BSG within Scotland.
· To provide opportunities for meaningful and constructive networking.
· To contribute to policy consultations that had a Scottish dimension via BSG UK.

In 2005, two half day members' events were organised at Glasgow Caledonian University. On 25 February an informal lunch was followed by a seminar with presentations by Harriet Mowat, Emmanuelle Tulle and Iain Atherton. On 11 November there was also an informal lunch and presentations by Mary Gilhooly, Angela Kydd, Jo Hockley and Susan Kerr. For further information on events please see the Calendar showing details of events. A one day conference was held on 19 June 2006 at Glasgow Caledonian University and a half day members' event was held on Monday 6 November 2006 at Queen Margaret University College, Edinburgh.

FUTURE LANDSCAPES OF AGEING CONFERENCE

Glasgow Caledonian University, Govan Mbeki Building
20th June 2008

A report of this conference is published in July 2008 issue of Generations Review.

A BSG Scotland members' event was held on 9 November 2007 at University Campus, Hamilton. A report of this event was published in the January 2008 issue of GR online. A report of the event held on 23 March 2007 at University of Stirling is available in the April 2007 issue of GR online.

The previous BSG Scotland members’ event was held on 6 November 2006 in the Board Room, Queen Margaret University College, Edinburgh, Corstorphine Campus. This was the first time this event had been held in Edinburgh and we very much enjoyed the venue and hospitality at QMUC. The event began with a delicious buffet lunch and an opportunity for members to network and exchange news and views, and to look at members' posters, leaflets and other materials on display.

The seminar session was chaired by Susan Tester, Co-ordinator of BSG Scotland, who introduced the session and the members’ research presentations.

Image Ailsa Cook, Lecturer in Sociology, Queen Margaret University College, spoke first on the Effectiveness of health and social care partnerships at delivering the outcomes that service users want .

Image Fiona Kelly, PhDStudent, University of Stirling, then presented work to date on her research on Creativity, Self-expression and well-being of people with dementia in institutional long-term care.

After the tea break and further networking, the third presentation was given by Dr Tim Kelly, Image Head of the Social Work Division, Glasgow Caledonian University, who spoke about research on Hearing older people’s voices: A preliminary exploration with older people to develop a group based auditory rehabilitation programme.

Each of the presentations stimulated much interest and lively discussion. Feedback from participants suggested that the format of the meeting had worked well and that further similar events would be welcome in 2007.

BSG Scotland held a very successful conference, Ageing Well – Option or Aspiration?, at Glasgow Caledonian University on 19th June 2006. The conference was organised with the Centre for Gerontological Practice, Glasgow Caledonian University, in association with HealthQWest. It was attended by 120 people, including academics and practitioners, many from the health services. There were four guest speakers, Molly Andrews, Mike Hepworth, Esther Linaker and John Keady. Malcolm Chisholm MSP, Minister for Communities, gave an address and attended for lunch and part of the afternoon session.
Image The organizing group was very pleased to inaugurate the Tilda Gaskell Memorial Lecture, given by Dr Molly Andrews (pictured). Tilda was a member of the group and had made a considerable contribution to BSG Scotland and to Gerontology in Scotland before her untimely death last year. We hope to continue this lecture in her memory at future conferences.

One innovative and successful feature of the conference was a poster session at which authors each gave a short presentation (see picture). Posters were grouped into themes and a discussant facilitated discussion on each theme. The format allowed presenters to introduce their work, and having the posters grouped ensured that delegates could see a range of research on each topic in a short space of time. Image The presentations took place during a two hour lunch session with posters in a large room adjacent to the lunch area. This encouraged participants to look at the posters and take part in the discussion. There was a vibrant atmosphere and the session worked very well, in spite of a few logistic difficulties.

The conference helped to raise the profile of BSG in Scotland. It was covered by Saga radio which included an interview with organizing group member Emmanuelle Tulle. The Minister for Communities, Malcolm Chisholm MSP, attended the conference and gave a very clear address on current policies for older people. Image He also took great interest in the poster session and spoke with many of the participants over lunch (see picture with Professor Mary Gilhooly and Professor Debbie Tolson). The poster session and lunchtime networking provided a valuable part of the day for many delegates. Feedback from participants was largely positive and will be useful in planning future conferences.
