The Journal of Global Ageing (JoGA), the official journal of the British Society of Gerontology, is looking for a Social Medial Lead. JoGA is a rapidly emerging platform for high-quality scholarship on ageing across diverse global contexts. It publishes cutting-edge research that advances understanding of later life, policy, and practice worldwide. With an interdisciplinary focus, the journal brings together perspectives from across the social sciences, health, and policy, positioning itself as a key outlet for innovative and internationally relevant ageing research. To support and grow the development of JoGA we are looking for someone who is actively engaged with the social gerontology communities online to create content for Journal of Global Ageing’s social media accounts. The core objective of the role is to increase the profile of the journal on social channels and build an engaged community of followers interested in global perspectives on ageing. It is important to stress that this is an unpaid role. Person Specification: Social Media Lead – Journal of Global Ageing • Awareness of the role of social media in academic publishing, knowledge dissemination, and research impact. • Understanding of how social media ecosystems function, including platform algorithms, content formats, and audience engagement strategies. • Understanding of key issues, debates, and themes within ageing, gerontology, or related interdisciplinary fields. • Demonstrated ability to design and implement social media strategies that maximise engagement and reach. • Excellent written communication skills, with the ability to translate academic content into accessible and engaging posts. • Proficiency across a range of platforms (e.g. X/Twitter, LinkedIn, Bluesky, Instagram), including tailoring content to different audiences. • Strong analytical skills, including the ability to interpret engagement metrics and refine strategy accordingly. • Ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and deliver outputs with minimal supervision. • Creative thinking and content development skills, including the use of visuals, threads, and campaigns. • Proven experience managing or contributing to professional or organisational social media accounts. • Highly self-motivated and proactive, with the ability to take initiative and drive activity independently. • Flexible and adaptable approach to work, with the ability to respond to emerging opportunities and trends. • Collaborative mindset, with the ability to work effectively with an editorial team to identify and act on opportunities.
Salary: It is important to stress that this is an unpaid role
Deadline: 22 May 2026
• Working with the JoGA editorial team and BUP, to generate and publish social media content for the Journal at least once per week, primarily on LinkedIn. • To promote the journal and increase its social media audience and levels of engagement • To keep up to date with the journal’s priority content for promotion e.g. new papers, issues and call for submissions • To repost, share and engage with content unrelated to the journal but of interest to the journal’s target audience, examples include relevant job postings, events, initiatives and events. • To collaborate with others (BUP staff, British Society of Gerontology etc) to coordinate a schedule of social media activities • To attend the Annual Editorial Board meeting to help understand the priorities for the year ahead The role holder would become a member of the JoGA editorial team and would be supported by the Bristol University Press marketing team. BUP will provide training, help with content planning, and will manage all the technical aspects of the account like set-up and analytics. Initial term: 2 years, with an option to extend.
