The conference welcomes symposium, paper and poster submissions from academics, researchers, practitioners, educators, policy-makers, the third sector, students, and those interested in researching ageing and later life.

To promote interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary perspectives of ageing, the conference will draw on abstracts from across disciplines:

  • Health promotion and public health
  • Medicine, nursing, physiotherapy, occupational therapy & allied health professions
  • Social care
  • Social policy
  • Science, engineering & technology
  • Architecture, built environment & design
  • and other related fields.

Submissions considering key issues in methodology, or presenting ideas, critical reflections, or case studies from industry or practice are also welcome.

Themes and sub-themes

The general theme of the conference is:
Ageing in an Unequal World Shaping Environments for the 21st Century

The conference sub-themes are:

  • Unequal ageing
  • Environments for ageing in the 21st Century
  • Ageing in a global context
  • Social participation, citizenship and the welfare state
  • Health and social care practices and contexts
  • Theories, methods and critical perspectives
  • Technology and innovation
  • The arts, leisure and consumption
  • Connections and relationships
  • Work, retirement and the economy

Submissions falling outside the conference sub-themes are also welcome and will be considered.

Oral, poster presentations or oral-as-part-of-a-symposium

  • Abstract title word limit: 30 words
  • Abstract word limit: 250 words
  • Maximum number of references: 5
  • Headings: Unstructured abstract with no tables, diagrams or pictures

Prospective authors are invited to submit an abstract of no more than 250 words with sufficient detail to allow the committee to judge the merit of the submission. Please indicate your preferred type of presentation (oral, poster or oral-as-part-of-a-symposium). Abstracts not selected for oral presentation will automatically be considered for poster presentation, unless the author informs us otherwise by emailing bsgconference2018@britishgerontology.org.

Authors should submit an abstract (oral, poster or oral-as-part-of-a-symposium) via the ‘Submit Your Abstract’ button at the top/bottom of this page. Please Do NOT use this submission button to convene a symposium - please see below for more information.

Authors should select up to three conference sub-themes that most appropriately reflect their submission. The Scientific Committee reserves the right to allocate an abstract to a different sub-theme, if more appropriate.

Authors can submit no more than two abstracts where they are named as the primary author. However, there is no limit on the number of abstracts in which someone can appear as a co-author. The Scientific Committee will aim to reduce conflict in scheduling multiple presentations where someone is named as a co-author, however we cannot guarantee this. A submission of an abstract with multiple authors will be an indication that all authors approve the submission and content of the abstract. For posters, please download the Poster Guidelines.

Symposia/Flagship Symposia

  • Symposium title word limit: 30 words
  • Symposium overview word limit: 250 words
  • Abstract title word limit: 30 words (for each individual presentation in the symposium)
  • Abstract word limit: 250 words (for each individual presentation in the symposium)
  • Maximum number of references: 5
  • Headings: Unstructured abstract

Prospective convenors of a symposium have two options when submitting:

  1. To 'convene your symposium' for consideration*
  2. To 'convene your symposium & submit your abstract' for consideration at the same time

*For use by a symposium convenor who does not wish to present at their own symposium.

In both options, prospective convenors are invited to submit a proposal, of no more than 250 words detailing the symposium title and symposium abstract to be held during the conference. This usually comprises 3-4 oral presentations, agreed between the convenor and the presenters, and dedicated to a particular theme, topic or research project. Please only convene your symposium when you have the following information to hand:

  • Symposium title
  • Symposium abstract (overview of the symposium)
  • Information about the Chair of the symposium
  • Email addresses of those you wish to invite to present at your symposium
  • Details of your own abstract that you wish to submit as part of the symposium (if applicable)

Please note that the Scientific Committee is happy to consider alternative formats for symposia.

On day one of the Conference BSG will hold three simultaneous flagship symposia where audience numbers will be larger than at other session times and you are invited to specify if you would like your symposium to be considered for one of these.

In addition to providing the symposium title and overview, the convenor is required to ensure symposium presenters each submit their abstracts and link them to their symposium. When convening your symposium you are required to enter the email addresses of those you wish to present as part of your symposium. Each presenter will receive an email with instructions on how to submit their abstract and link it to your symposium (please advise presenters to check their 'Junk' folder if they do not receive an email invitation.

The convenor will be responsible for chairing/acting as a discussant at the symposium, or nominating a chair (and discussant where applicable) for the symposium.

Convenors should suggest up to three conference sub-themes which are appropriate to host the symposium/special session, although submissions falling outside the conference sub-themes are also welcome and will be considered.

Preference for a 90 minute or 1 hour symposium slot can be specified at the time of submission however, it may not be possible to accommodate this.
