Report of the Honorary Secretary
Dr Wendy Martin

Hello everyone,

As co-chair of the BSG Brunel 2010 conference organising committee I would first like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who attended and contributed to our annual conference this July. It was a real privilege to be part of such a fantastic team and to be involved in such a strong, inter/national and diverse academic programme that not only reflected the multidisciplinary nature of BSG – with contributions on theory, policy, practice, methodology and empirical research – but as always involved established experts presenting alongside emergent researchers. There is an evident energy, enthusiasm and commitment around ageing and ageing studies that we at BSG want to capture and move forward with.  I am convinced our new strategy – now led by Mim Bernard, our new President of BSG, will achieve this.

I am also delighted to welcome our new members of the Executive Committee. In 2010 there was a call for nominations for 3 positions (2 Officers; 1 member) on the Executive Committee. The election results, announced at the 2010 AGM, are:

Professor Robin Means (University of West Of England): elected as President-Elect.

John Miles (Keele University): re-elected as a Member of the Executive Committee.

Dr Veronika Williams (Brunel University): elected as Treasurer-Elect.

Many congratulations to you all – I welcome you to the Executive Committee and very much look forward to working with you.  I would also like to thank Julia Twigg and Sheila Peace for all your years of service and commitment to the committee – you will be very much missed.  The full membership of the current BSG Committee is available here.

As reported at the AGM one of my key aims in my final year as Honorary Secretary is to continue to promote and enhance communications within and outside BSG – and the development of the website is central to this. I am very much looking forward to working with the BSG website team on this. Any comments or ideas on this, or any other topic, from members are of course always welcomed.  Please remember that you are always able to keep up to date with BSG matters as all the AGM papers and Executive minutes are, or soon will be if very recent, available in the members’ section of the BSG website.

Finally, I would like to thank Rachel Hazelwood (BSG administrator) and Rachel Pitman (Website Manager) for their continuing diligent and outstanding work and commitment to BSG.  Without doubt the achievements we have made on our 5 year strategy would not be possible without their support and creativity.  Thank you!
