How can we support people living with dementia and their families / carers to make informed and person-centred decisions about eating and drinking, particularly when these decisions involve balancing risks, quality of life, personal preferences and clinical considerations?
This international knowledge-exchange event will bring together practitioners, healthcare professionals, academics, researchers and people with lived experience to explore approaches to nutrition, dementia and shared decision-making across different health and care contexts.
Speakers and representatives from the UK, South Africa and Japan will share experiences and perspectives from their respective countries on the same case study, providing an opportunity to compare approaches, identify common challenges and learn from different models of practice. The event will consider how cultural, professional and healthcare contexts influence decision-making around nutrition and dementia, and what we can learn from one another to support person-centred care.
A particular focus will be Eating and Drinking with Acknowledged Risks (EDAR), an approach increasingly used in the UK to support shared decision-making when a person continues eating and drinking despite recognised risks associated with swallowing difficulties. Contributions from England will provide opportunities to discuss EDAR alongside international practices and perspectives.
The event will include presentations, discussions and service-user perspectives, with an emphasis on shared learning and exchange between practice, research and lived experience.
The event is open to anyone with an interest in nutrition, dementia and shared decision-making, including:
• healthcare and social care professionals and practitioners;
• academics and researchers;
• people living with dementia, family members and carers;
• service users and representatives of community and voluntary organisations; and
• others with a professional or personal interest in the topic.
The main event will run online from 12:00 to 13:30 UK time / Japan Standard Time (JST, UTC+9): 21:00 – 22:30 / South Africa Standard Time (SAST, UTC+2): 14:00 – 15:30.
Join us to share experiences, explore different approaches and consider how international learning can strengthen shared decision-making around nutrition and dementia.
