As we celebrate thirty years of the International Longevity Centre UK’s founding, we continue to ask the question: what does it mean to live longer – and what are the opportunities?

The UK’s hosting of the G20 offers a once-in-a-generation opportunity to connect local action with global ambition. A Burnham government has placed social care reform front and centre, followed by the Casey Commission on Adult Social Care report due a month after our conference. Pensions reform is firmly on the agenda, with the Pensions Commission interim report and the State Pension Age Review both demanding attention. Devolution is creating new possibilities for local leadership on ageing. And the fiscal pressures of longer lives – from health spending to economic inactivity – are forcing governments everywhere to confront a question they have deferred for too long: is ageing a cost to be managed, or an investment opportunity to be seized? We believe it is both – and that the answer depends on the decisions we make now, not in another thirty years.

For too long the policy conversation has been stuck. It’s time to break that cycle. Future of Ageing 2027 will mark ILC’s 30th anniversary and the UK hosting the G20 not by looking back, but by looking forward with urgency. This is not a celebration. It is a call to action – from the people best placed to drive it.
