The contribution of BSG members to UK social science continues to be acknowledged by the Academy of Social Sciences (AcSS) - the body charged with promoting the social sciences in the UK for public benefit.

At its recent awards lunch, held at the Institute of Directors in Pall Mall, London, the Academy’s President, Professor Sir Howard Newby, presented certificates to three BSG members: Sheila Peace (Open University), Judith Phillips (Swansea University) and Tom Scharf (Keele University) in recognition of their individual contributions to research on ageing. Also present at the awards lunch was Malcolm Johnson (University of Bristol) – a longstanding member of the Academy. In addition to a fine lunch, guests were able to listen to talks given by David Willetts, Shadow Secretary of State for Innovation, Universities and Skills, and Ian Diamond, Chief Executive of the ESRC.
