BSG Annual Conference 2009 – Bristol
Culture, Diversity and Ageing The 38th Annual Conference of the British Society of Ageing
Simon Evans
University of the West of England, On behalf of the conference organising team in Bristol.

This year’s conference is being jointly hosted by the University of the West of England and The University of Bristol. We are delighted to announce that the newly merged Help the Aged/Age Concern charity are lead sponsors of this year’s conference. They will have a strong presence at the event, including an address to the whole conference.

Our academic programme includes three stimulating plenary sessions from:

  • Alan Walker ( University of Sheffield),
  • Gloria Gutman ( Simon Fraser University, Vancouver) and
  • Merill Silverstein ( University of Southern California).

More details of the speakers and their presentations can be found at www.bsg2009.org.uk/Default.aspx?pageid=330

In addition, 150 papers will be presented across the conference themes, which are Cultures of Ageing, Research Methods, Health and Wellbeing for Older People, Ageing and Technology, Long Term Health and Social Care, and Diversity and Discrimination. We also offer a fantastic selection of symposia focusing on a diverse range of topics, including extra care housing, user involvement in research, continence difficulties, individual budgets and writing for publication.

Add to that some great posters, lots of interesting stalls, research network meetings and the presentation of the Alan Walker Prize, and we think there will be plenty to inspire and excite throughout the three days.

The social programme has been designed to reflect the overall theme of the conference and includes Salsanova (Salsa & Latin Dance band), a dance performance, poetry readings from the Grey Hen Press and an international food buffet.

If you are a student or early stage researcher don’t forget to check out the range of events being organised by ERA at this year’s conference. Look out for more details soon on the conference web site, which can be found at www.bsg2009.org.uk
