Disability in later life: causes, consequences and future prospects
Tuesday 15 September 2009, Modelling Ageing Populations to 2030 (MAP2030) Seminar Series
We would like to invite you to the fourth in a series of seminars presenting findings from the MAP2030 study funded under the New Dynamics of Ageing research programme. This study involves a team of researchers from the Universities of East Anglia and Leicester, the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, the Personal Social Services Research Unit and the Social Policy Department at LSE, and the Pensions Policy Institute. Through modelling the needs and resources of older people to 2030 the study aims to produce analysis to inform public debate and the development of future long-term care and pension policy up to 2030.
In the second seminar we will explore the causes of disability in later life and how changing disease risk factors and treatments might affect future levels of disability and the need for and costs of care. The seminar is to be held at the London School of Economics and Political Science on Tuesday 15 September 2009, from 12pm to 2pm. Further details will follow, and lunch will be provided.
We hope that you will be able to join us for this event. Spaces for the event are limited.

November 4 - 5, Florence, Italy
We are pleased to inform you that the OASIS 1st International Conference will take place on November 4-5, 2009 in Florence, Italy. It will provide a forum to present current and future work as well as to exchange ideas in the field of Independent Living and Autonomous Mobility for elderly.
How to support holistically the independent living and mobility of the elderly across Europe? How to connect services for the elderly in an one-stop-shop fashion and interrelate/ integrate them? What are the elderly and their families/ carers primary needs, concerns and expectations from the technologies and services arising? These, and much more, are to be presented in Florence, during OASIS' 1st International Conference.
OASIS is a Large Scale Integrating Project – partially funded by the European Commission (FP7-ICT 215754) - with the aim to develop an open and innovative reference architecture, based upon ontologies and semantic services, that will allow plug and play and cost-effective interconnection of existing and newly developed services in all domains required for the independent and autonomous living of older people and their enhanced Quality of Life ( please visit our web site www.oasis-project.eu).
The conference will be held at the Palazzo degli Affari (just 100 m from the Santa Maria Novella Central Station). Palazzo degli Affari is located just a few minutes walk from Piazza del Duomo, Piazza della Signoria, the city’s main artistic and cultural sites, and the major hotels.

Second Middle East Congress on Age, Ageing& Alzheimer's: Challenges in Geriatric Care
November 4th to 6th, 2009, Quality Inn, Tripoli, Lebanon
We are announcing the Second Middle East Congress on Age, Ageing& Alzheimer's: Challenges in Geriatric Care expected to be held on Nov 4th to 6th, 2009 in parallel to the MEAMA Workshop from 5-8 Nov 2009 (Health Care Services for the Elderly) by the Middle-East Academy for Medicine of Ageing. This is inspired by the first Middle East Congress on Ageing organized in Istanbul. The conference will be -at Quality Inn - Tripoli - Lebanon
"The Aging Phenomenon" considered as one of the most significant developments of the 21st century brings some complicated and intricate outcomes with it when evaluated in societal terms. Middle Eastern countries have certain cultural, social and economic characteristics in common with similar aspiration. The percentage of elderly in the Middle East is expected to increase with improvement of the health care delivery in the area. The region , like other developing countries, needs to define the policies and programs that will reduce the burden of aging populations on the society and its economy. There is a need to ensure the availability of health and social services for older persons and promote their continuing participation in a socially and economically productive life.
Major changes continue to occur in Geriatric Care in the Region. There are increasing external and internal pressures to improve the quality of patient care, providing better services for the elderly , and to emphasize health policies and regulation that protect the elderly in the region. Hence the conference on "The Challenges in Geriatric Care" will involve public organizations and NGOs cooperating to share information, skill and experience in a gradually increasing manner, and taking the lead in great social developments with the resulting synergy, reveals itself as a phenomenon worth appreciation. Moreover, the developments gain speed with the financing provided by the business world, which is aware and conscientious of its social responsibilities.
The Program of the Second Middle East Congress on Aging will include the following:
· Middle East and Aging
· Health Care Services for the Elderly
· Education and training for the team
· Alzheimer's disease
· The Elderly People and Developments
· Health and Welfare
· Support Mechanisms
· Mental Health
· Geriatric Syndrome
· Towards the formation of Social Policies
· Other Issues
The conference will consider issues in Geriatric Care and Education, sharing and evaluating experiences of clinicians and other healthcare professionals from the Middle-East and around the world on matters affecting patient care and education.
Speakers well known in their field will be invited from the Middle-East, Europe, Australia, and the USA in addition to local speakers. We are looking forward to the possibility of including your organization, institution or University in this prestigious event. We would like to know whether your organization would like officially to be part of this important event and whether you would like to nominate any member of your organization to be member of the committees below?
· International Advisors Members
· Scientific
· Organization
· Social
In addition we would like to know whether you will be interested to be one of the speakers for the congress?
Hoping that you will join us in bringing together an exciting program for Geriatric Care, we thank you very much for your attention and look forward to receiving your response.
