About NOGS.

In recent months NOGS, the Network of Gerontology Students, has been growing exponentially. The goals of NOGS are:

  • to offer a vibrant forum for the exchange of new research and intellectual ideas amongst students of Gerontology
  • to provide a network for British Society of Gerontology students to meet, debate and support each other in their educational and social endeavours
  • To provide future talent for the continued management and growth of the British Society of Gerontology.

There are many benefits to being active within NOGS. The group meets each year at the BSG annual conference as well as at 'Research Directions', the annual student event. Members of NOGS can also be part of an active listserve, keeping students up to date on relevant news and activities. If you are a student or know of a student who might be interested in joining NOGS, please contact Karen Baker and Kelly Fitzgerald at nogs2007@hotmail.co.uk

Search for New NOGS Chair.

NOGS is searching for the next chair or co-chairs of the student organization. If you would like to be considered for this role please send us an email.

Upcoming Student Event.

The last NOGS event at Kings College in March was a great success. We are looking forward to achieving even greater things in 2007 and are busy organizing the next NOGS event "Research Directions 2007." This will be on 15-16 May 2007 at Keele University in Staffordshire.

Research Directions 2007 will coincide with the 20th Anniversary of the Keele Centre for Social Gerontology and Tom Scharf's inaugural professorial lecture. On the 15th May attendees will have the opportunity to join key researchers, practitioners and policy makers in the field of ageing for a series of presentations, then to stay on for Professor Scharf's lecture 'The Extremes of Age: Challenging Poverty, Promoting Inclusion' in the evening. Following the Keele lecture, NOGS invites students to a special social event in which students will have the opportunity to informally meet each other.

Wednesday, 16 May will be devoted to NOGS presentations, which will include posters and oral papers by students, lectures from professionals in the field of ageing, and an opportunity for networking. This will give students an opportunity to present in a non-threatening atmosphere and to learn about other students' research. If you are new to the field and unsure of what you would like to focus your research on, this is a great way to learn about many different and unique research possibilities. If you are looking for a place to practice presenting this will be an ideal forum, as presenters will be provided with supportive feedback from the student audience. It is also a great opportunity for networking with other students from around Britain and further afield.

We invite students to attend both days. If you are interested in presenting or attending, please contact Karen and Kelly at nogs2007@hotmail.co.uk. Or if you have any questions or would like information sent to you via email, please send a request to nogs2007@hotmail.co.uk and we will add you to our email list. Either Karen or Kelly will respond to you.

  • The official call for abstracts will appear in January 2007.
  • The registration application will be posted on the BSG website by the end of January 2007 along with accommodation options, or you can send an email to the above address requesting an application.

Further details about Research Directions 2007, will soon be posted on the BSG website. We look forward to seeing you there!
