The British Society of Gerontology’s (BSG) Emerging Researchers in Ageing (ERA) provides students, early career academics, researchers, and practitioners, or those making a mid-career change to ageing studies, with opportunities for learning, networking, and mentor support. We hold in-person events throughout the year including our annual conference, writing workshops and networking events as well as frequent online sessions. ERA are seeking support from senior BSG colleagues to support with the delivery of ERA's key activities such as our mentoring scheme and "Gerontology & Tonics".
How can you help?
- ERA holds online Gerontology & Tonic sessions via zoom typically
every 4-6 weeks. We invite guest speakers across all
career stages (PhD to Prof.) to give short
presentations accessible to “accidental
gerontologists”. We follow this with a Q&A and an
informal chat about your favourite tipple (alcoholic
or non-alcoholic).
Could you volunteer up to 90 minutes of your time to
speak about your research topic to a small group of
ECRs? 20-30 minute talk with 30-45 minutes of
questions.
- The long-standing ERA Mentoring scheme connects ECRs
with more senior academics based on shared
research interests and support needs. Important to note that this is not a replacement for PhD supervisory relationships and is aimed at providing ECRs with a network connection outwith their institution, most mentees are looking for career development advice, and guidance with publishing, or grant writing.
Do you have capacity to mentor an ECR? We match
mentors and mentees for a period of 12 months and ask
for only 3 communications (typically a Teams call) over
this time.
If you have capacity to support our ECRs and are interested in volunteering, please get in touch: Dr Lisa Davison, ERA Chair, era@britishgerontology.org
